... the Newsflash:

03/01/2012 two other AVA's registered beside Coombsville:

Just before Coombsville another so called designated viticultural area became the status AVA in the southern part of California in Los Angeles and Kern counties.

The 'Antelope Valley of the California High Dessert AVA' stretches over 172'235 hectares, that's nearly double the size of whole Napa Valley and shows again that some AVA's cannot have something in common with a serious identity of a wine district with the same comparable style. BUT at present only two wineries are located within and grapes are planted on 53 ha. Does that make any sense?

Further north the 'Naches Heights AVA' will become the 12th AVA of Washington state officially on 13th of January.

Located within the Columbia Valley AVA near Yakima grapes, mostly Viognier, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir with Syrah, are planted on just 15 ha land of the total 5'360 possible ha of the AVA's boundary. Elevation is higher than most other parts of Washington ranging from 345 to 640 meters and it receives plenty of heat and just little but enough rainfall. Notable wineries are Naches Heights Vineyards, Wilridge and Harlequin Wine Cellars.

18/12/2011 new AVA approved in Napa County:

A new appellation, the Coombsville AVA was recognised by the Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau  in November, bringing the number to 16. The new AVA is located east of the town Napa and boasts a  total of 4,484 hectares, 550 of which are within commercial vineyards. The district consists of 26 wineries and 13 additional growers.

With an altitude of 600 meters on its highest point at Mount George it offers a longer growing season than in most other parts of Napa.

Long known as a source of high-quality fruit for some high-end Napa Cab's it might become an important spot over the next years.
